Creating Fencing with Steel Hollow Sections

Steel hollow sections (SHS) are highly popular for constructing fencing and gates due to their strength, durability, and clean appearance. Here’s a short look at how someone might use hollow sections for these applications:

Components of Fencing and Gates Using SHS

Posts

Purpose: To provide the primary support structure for the fence.

Implementation: Hollow sections are ideal for posts because they are robust enough to withstand wind loads and other external forces. Posts are typically set into the ground using concrete footings for stability.

Rails

Purpose: To connect the posts and provide horizontal support for the infill panels or pickets. These might not be required if using a weld mesh type sheet as infills, as these are light enough and rigid enough to not require supporting rails.

Implementation: Hollow sections are used as horizontal rails that span between the posts. They offer a sturdy backbone to which infill panels or pickets can be attached.

Infill Panels or Pickets

Purpose: To create the barrier portion of the fence.

Implementation: Infill panels made from various materials (e.g., metal, wood) can be affixed to the horizontal rails, or individual pickets made from SHS can be welded or bolted in place at regular intervals.

Gate Frames

Purpose: To provide a structural frame for gates.

Implementation: SHS can be used to construct frame structures for gates, offering a strong yet lightweight option that can swing or slide easily.

Steps to Construct Fencing Using SHS

Design and Planning

Determine the overall height and design of the fence (e.g., privacy fence, decorative fence).
Plan post spacing, gate locations, and the type of infill material to use.

Material Selection

Choose SHS with appropriate dimensions and thickness for the required strength.
Common dimensions for fence posts might include 50x50mm, 70x70mm, or larger, depending on structural requirements.

Post Installation

Dig holes for the fence posts, typically spaced 6-8 feet apart.
Set the SHS posts in the holes, ensuring they are plumb (vertically level), and fill the holes with concrete.
Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours.

Attach Horizontal Rails

Cut SHS to the required length for the horizontal rails.
Weld or bolt the rails to the posts at the desired heights (usually a top rail, bottom rail, and possibly a middle rail for extra support).

Install Infill Panels or Pickets

Attach pre-made infill panels to the horizontal rails using brackets, screws, or welding, depending on the material.

If using SHS pickets, weld or bolt them vertically to the horizontal rails at regular intervals.

Fabricate and Hang Gates:

Construct gate frames using SHS, ensuring they are square and sturdy.
Attach gate hardware (hinges, latches) to the frames.

Hang the gates on the appropriate posts, making necessary adjustments for smooth operation.

Finishing

Apply protective coatings to SHS (e.g., powder coating, galvanizing) to enhance durability and prevent rust.

Optionally, add decorative elements such as caps for posts or ornamental designs.

Benefits of Using SHS for Fencing and Gates

Durability: Steel hollow sections are resistant to warping, rotting, and pest damage.

Strength: Provide strong support and can withstand environmental pressures.

Aesthetics: Offer a clean and modern look suitable for various design styles.

Versatility: Can be customised for different heights, lengths, and designs.

Maintenance: Relatively low maintenance with appropriate protective coatings.
